Starting Budget Needed To Start An Online Business

by Deneil Merritt on January 29, 2010

I was on a webmaster forum. Not going to say which one. However, one guy asked can he start a online business with $25. Of course, you there’s people that do not have their own website or business but will answer yes or no base on what they read in the forums. Then there’s people that have their own online business that will give an answer of yes or no and some will give little tips to get started. (Me being one of them)

What I have noticed is there are 2 types of people positive and negative in 2 different categories. I will go over these different types of people and then let you all voice your thoughts on this as I know how I am and what my answer is to this. I just thought it would be great to hear from everybody views and opinions about this topic.

Little to no budget (Positive person) – This guy or girl is very positive about starting an online business. Ready to learn and work hard. However, has little to no budget but still goes for with it. (lol, I did this)

Little to no budget (Negative) – This guy or gal is very negative about having little to no budget to start an online business. Generally, these people do one of two things. Don’t start the business at all until they have a big budget which may take longer than starting the business and bring in an income from that business or they start the business with that mindset that their going to fail because of not having a budget.

Has a budget (Positive) – This guy or gal knows that he or she will be success because they are willing to learn, work hard, and has a budget to buy any resources they need. Generally most of these type of people are successful because they work just as hard a person with no budget however has a budget to do things faster and better.

Has a budget (Negative) – Now these are the people I have no choice but to laugh at. (I know im wrong for doing so but I don’t care) These type of people has a budget yet still negative about starting an online business because they think their budget isn’t big enough. They fail even with a budget because they let the thought of not having a bigger budget get in the way of their work.

The debate on the webmaster began when little to no budget people started saying yes you can start a business with $25 and some said $0. Of course me saying that I had to voice my thoughts on this because I started with $0 and just look at my income reports.

Some people stated that starting with $25 is not starting a business but starting a hobby. I guess I run an 3 figure a month a hobby soon to be 4 figures. :) LMAO! Also, in the IRS eyes, if you make a single dollar from your so call hobby. It is indeed now a business!

What do you think? What budget is needed to start an online business?

I like the last part, in regards to the IRS. lol… ZING!

In my opinion, the people who have the budget and are still negative, are so usually because they are afraid to start. They are seeing the internet from a marketing viewpoint, and think that the only way to get people’s attention is by throwing money at the problem in the form of advertising and such. The thought of building traffic organically through time and hard work never even occurs in their hard heads.

The truth is you can start an online business… even if you have to do so an hour a day at the library’s free internet. It can still be done. There are ways to turn nothing into something if you’re willing to put in the time. Of course, having the budget for a domain name of your own and a few months for your website to be online will go a long way. Can that be done with $25? Most definitely!

The whole analysis is off in my opinion. Ok, there’s positive and negative people but a lot of the enthusiastic people end up failing because they take massive risks. Risks are important no denying but a positive attitude doesn’t get you anything except the mindset to solve problems.

You’re in a position to live on 3 figures a month, which gives you a better base to work off than most people. That’s why I started young because I knew it’s easy to get trapped into the corporate lifestyle. Once you’re making thousands a month devoting time to a new venture is gonna be difficult. Like giving up smoking… just quit? I don’t think it’s gonna happen.

Most of these guys positve and negative that you’ve listed are gonna wash out, because they’re either not smart enough, can’t handle the lifestyle i.e. potential lack of social life, don’t have the persistence etc. The guy with the big budget, positive or negative is the most risky if he’s just come from the working world. In fact the positive, or too enthusiastic, guy is the one who can blow through cash the fastest and is more dangerous. These are the types of people who suddenly realize that money doesn’t mean dick and if you don’t have the knowledge you can burn through tens of thousands in a couple days.

On the flip side of this the people without a budget position themselves with all the other n00bs to the field and enter the most competitive world you can imagine, competing against low paid 3rd world workers, college kids just trying to make a buck or two etc.

I think that rather than being positive or negative you need to accept youre a n00b and are gonna need to spend time learning things and plan to accomodate that. If you have a big budget, play the game like you have a small budget to avoid watching it disappear. If you have a small budget you need to play to your strengths and probably sell your skills to build up a monthly cashflow to prevent yourself competing against a million other people with no budget.

Key here is strategy… daily todo lists… Keeping your objective clear and responding analytically.

Actually, you have to make $600 in one calendar quarter before the IRS gives a hoot. Imho, many people starting a website or blog are very uneducated about web-mastering and often have unrealistic expectations about their short to mid term earnings potential. That said, it is definitely possible to start on a budget of $0, but if you have $25 to buy a couple of domain names and are willing to learn, you’re that much ahead.

It may be also that you are earning something in a month and invest 50% of this to your project. So the budget may not be very big and it takes more time but if you work hard im sure it will get to your goal.
