On Site Search Engine Optimization For Blogs

by Deneil Merritt on June 24, 2009

As internet entrepreneur, everyone should know or learn how to do on site SEO. I love doing on site search engine optimization work on my blog. Since I am not so good at getting tons of backlinks. (I do ok) I still find a way to get in the top 10 in search engines for keywords I want to rank for.

This is very important if you want traffic to your blog and have that traffic make you money and/or become readers. (Fans if you feeling like a star) Do this right the first time and you will find yourself or should I say your blog in the top 10 of search engines. You will have to do this for every post in your blog. if your keywords don’t have that much competition. You will find your blog posts in the top 10 as soon as it gets index.

First off, I want this to be known that this on-site search engine optimization is for self hosted wordpress bloggers. Why am I saying this? Because this is what I use and know how to do SEO for. I have mini sites and blogs using wordpress with my SEO work done to them. Ranking in the top 10 for many keywords. (Even keywords I didn’t aim for)

Wordpress plugins needed for on-site search engine optimization for your blog below;

All in One SEO Pack
This plugin is very important for your on site search engine optimization. You must have this plugin. The plugin allows you to set the title, description, and keywords for every post and page on your blog.

Google XML Sitemaps
This plugin makes it easy for the search engines to find all your posts and pages on your blog. A total must have for this.

Link Demon (Optional)
This plugin is a internal link building tool. Once you set the keywords you want the post link in, you never have to think about posts to link to because it does it for you.

Now that you have your plugins installed, lets get to work with our on site search engine optimization. Its important that you do your research for every sinlge post and page that you do. Yes, your homepage keywords are very important as well.

I use a combination of google adwords keyword tool, google wonder wheel, and google trends. I know, I know. Way too much google for your liking but this is the things I use for my keyword research. I won’t get into how I use them, that’s a whole post in itself.

Search Engine Optimization For Your Post

Now that you got your keywords, its time to put them to get use. You want your main keyword in your post title, use the 2nd and 3rd keywords in your subtitles, then you want the rest of your keywords throughout your post. This makes your article is very keyword rich. You with me so far? Good.

Before you publish your article, scroll down to set your title, description, and keywords for your post. Place the title of your post in the title slot. That’s pretty easy huh? All of the on site SEO is easy for blogs.

Now for the description don’t just place something dumb. I will use this post as an example. Do not write something like this “This post is about search engine optimization” that’s just not going to work. It should go more along the lines of “Deneil Merritt explains on site search engine optimization for blogs, goes into detail how to set up seo for each blog post, and how to do internal linking.”

Now for the keywords, use the main 3 keywords or keyphrase you aiming to rank for. Again, I will use this post as an example. Do not use general keywords for your post like “SEO” and “Search Engine Optimization”. Use more targeted keywords and phrases like “On-site Search Engine Optimization” and “On site SEO for blogs”

Internal Linking For Your Blog

Now this is the fun part. (Well for me anyway) I like going through my old posts to find 1, 2, or more to link to in my new post. If you hate this part or feel you have a blog way too big to keep doing this for every post then you may want to use link demon for your internal linking needs.

Its very important that you link to other posts and pages on your blog with every new post you make. Also don’t forget about your home page. Remember to use author text for each link you place in a post. Remember your keyword research. Its very important with your internal linking.

Now go back into older posts and find author of your new posts and place the new post link inside the author text of the old post. This is what most or almost all bloggers over look which allows bloggers like myself to out rank them for keywords we want. I have out ranked other bloggers that had more external backlinks than me for keywords just because I had more internal links with the right author text.

Doing all of this keyword research, SEO each blog post, and internal linking in every blog post will result in better ranking in search engines. Once you get use to doing this, you won’t really think about doing it ever again. You will find yourself doing it for every post as normal like writing an article. You can’t post without an article so you can’t post without your on site seo.

My final thoughts – believe in what you do and keep learning everyday to improve yourself and your blog and watch your blog grow faster.

What do you do for your on site search engine optimization?

Yeah, wordpress as some many different plugins that I had to learn just to use the ones I need. With my last blog I must have used over 20 plugins at once. I am surprised that none of the conflicted with the other.

Hi there,

a fantastic post. I tried to tweet about it using the tweet icon and got the following:

This page is no longer valid. It looks like someone already used the token information you provided. Please return to the site that sent you to this page and try again … it was probably an honest mistake.

I’m using the tweetmeme.com to add the button to my posts, maybe have a look at that.

On another note, have you used link demon? I tried to search WordPress plugins directory and could not find it. I wanted to know about it.

Thanks for this information. Everywhere I go, I always bump into this `All In one SEO` plugin. All bloggers who have made great strides in blogging always recommend this plugin. I have been putting off installing this on my own blog for fear that it might conflict with the other plugins that serve some similar purpose. I guess there’s only one way to find out; it’s time to go for it.

This is the first time I’ve heard of Link Demon. Maybe it’s worth a try too.

About the only thing that ticks me off is when I upgrade the version of WP I am using and find a plugin that doesn’t work after the update.

It’s a pain but it’s even more of a pain when you can’t access the admin area or blog until you go back in and delete the faulty plugin.

The most plugins I have going on one blog is 25 but that’s only one blog. The blog in question is one that I make almost nothing on but I do use it to experiment with plugins and code modifying.

I love Wordpress blogging mainly because of all the plugins that are available. I am always finding people using some I don’t use or haven’t even heard of.

I use a related post plugin that works great. It’s called: Darren’s Related Posts plugin and works on the keywords for the post.

I have loved using All-in-One SEO plugin for a long time now. And I also the plugin for a Google Sitemap.

I also like using Better Blogroll plugin so that I can show as many or as few links as I want but they show at random so Google doesn’t see the same 20 or 30 links.

I use both these plugins and I swear by them especially the All in One SEO Pack. For any new blogger these are a must!

I never heard of the third one that you have here as optional. I might have a look to see what it’s all about!

Yeah, I know what you mean. Same thing happen on this blog when I upgraded I had to delete a plugin.

Plugin developers really such stay on top of these things if they want to keep all those backlinks their getting.

I have to pick a blog to do testing on as I haven’t done so. I read its really important to have a demo blog to test things out on.

What are the benefits of having a test blog besides test plugins?

Opps — I never know internal link building was important. Looks like I have a fair bit of work to do on my blog. As for the plugins you mentioned, your bang on right. I use two of the three, but have heard a lot about the 3rd one as well. I’ll have to install the plugin soon.

I actually use the Platinum SEO Plugin instead of All-in-One SEO. Mainly because I use another plugin, Simple Tags, which is not compatible with All-in-One SEO and I LOVE Simple Tags.

Have you ever used either of these plugins? Just curious.

Deneil Merritt July 16, 2009 at 6:43 am

Yes, I have used Platinum SEO Plugin on my other blog. Works pretty good. I have never used “Simple Tags”

Deneil,

“Now go back into older posts and find author of your new posts and place the new post link inside the author text of the old post.”

I don’t quite understand how you do this. Can you elaborate a little more on what is this. Also I am using Related Posts plugin so does this do the job as well?

You must be logged into twitter before clicking the twittley tweet button. I normal just sign into twitter via twittley and don’t sign out.

Twittley has a lot more benefits than just sending a tweet to twitter. The post about it should be published in a day or 2. I don’t remember which day I set it for.

Yes, I have used link demon on kushmoney. Works great, build internal backlinks without thinking about it. You just have to set up your keywords and click publish. You won’t find it in the wordpress plugins. That’s why I provided the link to the website where you can download it.

The only down side about it is you will have to go back through all your posts to set up all the posts for their keywords. I will make a post about it so I can explain it. Its way too much to put in a comment.

“All in one SEO” is always the first plugin I install. What plugin you use for SEO?

Yeah, link demon does come in handy. I am not going to use it on this blog though. That way I won’t be lazy with my internal linking important posts if I didn’t use its set keywords.

I use the blog I am linking to in the URL box as my test blog. I have had it the longest and kind of use it for testing and making all the mistakes I make. :)

I am finally going to follow the advice I have read so many times, but only decided to really follow it after reading your post this morning, and that is about putting personality into my blogs.

I will try it with this test blog and see what happens.

Deneil Merritt June 29, 2009 at 10:01 pm

Yeah, that plugin is hands down a great plugin to use if you lazy about internal linking. I got a post coming up on how to use it.

Yeah, thankfully there’s people out there that have the skills to make great plugins.

Reply

Deneil Merritt July 5, 2009 at 8:34 pm

Yeah, internal linking got me in the top 10 for many keywords with my old blog as many of my posts the only backlinks was internal linking.

Sure no problem, I am happy to help.

Let’s say you made a new post called “happy days” and in one of your old posts you use the words “happy days” in the post. Place the link of the new post inside of the old post. In the words “happy days”

Related Posts plugin isn’t the same as links within the post.
