Obsessive Compulsive Disorder – Pulling Out Hair

by Deneil Merritt on June 5, 2009

My obsessive compulsive disorder is pulling out my hair. I have been pulling out my hair for about 4 or 5 years now. Just sitting down watching TV for about 3 or 4 hours, I look down and see a ball of hair on the floor. It has now become worst since I have been trying to stop pulling out my hair.

I can feel when I really want to pull out my hair so I quickly put something in my hands from cups, remotes, to getting on the computer and start typing. There are times the feeling come but there’s nothing to grab or do so I just pull out my hair. There are spots where there is no hair from me pulling out my hair.

Its been a month since I began my quest to stop pulling out my hair. I have looked up many ways people have tried to stop pulling out their hair from covering their hair to cutting their hair too short to pull out. I hate having short hair so cutting my hair was out of the question.

From my pictures you can see that I keep my hair covered. Many days I forget to cover my hair and wind up pulling out a ball of hair before the day is over. I find that keeping busy is my best way to stop pulling out my hair. As long as I am working on my sites or link building, I don’t pull out my hair.

Maybe this is why I love blogging, writing (or should I say typing?), My fingers are always busy writing articles for all the blogs I own.  Dealing with my OCD has made me write some really good articles that have helped people with blogging, affiliate marketing, and poker. So facing my OCD has a nice benefit. I am slowly going to stop pulling out my hair and people get to read some great articles by me. :)

How I face My OCD?

Step 1: Acknowledge that I have OCD. (I finally acknowledge it a month ago)
Step 2: Find a way to reduce pulling out my hair. (Cover my hair)
Step 3: Keep my hands and mind busy on something else. (Blogging is perfect)

That is how I face my OCD. Hopefully I can stop pulling out my hair by the end of year. It would be great to not have OCD in 2010. That is my goal and my dream.

If you have obsessive compulsive disorder of any kind. Please post what kind of OCD you have below and let me know how you deal with your obsessive compulsive disorder.

Deneil,

Thanks for being so brave and putting what must be a very private issue out there.

I guess like most things, recognition is the first step.

I know you’ve got a lot of folks pullin’ for you (no pun intended)so hang in there. Anything I can do, just holler.

Man, that would have been one tough article to write, but perhaps now that you have owned up to it you can start to turn things around. I wish you all the best in your endeavor to overcome this particular OCD issue.

Wow, not many people would share that kind of thing with others.

At least you are trying to beat this disorder, good luck and I hope you beat it. Owning up is the first step as Tumblemoose and Sire have already said; now the hard part begins.

My thing is to scratch my lip. My nails are usually in rough shape, and I just kind of scratch them along my lip line. I never really noticed it until I saw myself in a video doing it, and now I really focus on not doing it. I hope that you overcome your OCD issue… they are tough to break.

I have no idea if it would help, but I read about one way to stop yourself from having negative thoughts while playing sports is to wear a rubber band on the wrist and snap it every time you realize you are thinking in the wrong direction. I wonder if something similar would help every time you realize you are messing with your hair.

Wow Deneil, what a personal thing to share. My wife accuses me of this sometimes, but I know it’s just her opinion of a few habits I have. If you can’t stop this on your own, please see a doctor about it; nothing wrong with getting a professional to help you with something.

Pulling for you, my man!

Yeah, I just had to get it out. Good news though. I haven’t pulled my hair in 2 days. I would see a doctor about it but no health insurance. :(

Thanks for your support, I really appreciate it.

Obsessive compulsive disorder can be managed by increasing the brain serotonin level. This can be done by taking food supplements that contain L-Tryptophan.

George, this is the reason I made this blog. I want people to get to know me.

Yeah, for about a year or 2 I knew I had OCD but I refuse to acknowledge that I have OCD.

Thank you for your support, I really appreciate it.

I thought about for 3 days. Since this is my personal blog. I thought to myself, I should have no fear about posting anything. I am really afraid of losing all my hair because of my OCD. Maybe facing my OCD will encourage others to face their OCD.

Thank you for your support, I really appreciate it.

Well I have a need for writing and this is my personal blog. So I guess it was perfect topic to write about.

Yeah, I didn’t want to acknowledge it. My girlfriend kept pointing it out. I guess she got sick of clearing up my hair from the floor.

The hardest thing right now is remembering to cover my hair with something. If I don’t I start pulling and before I notice it there’s a ball of hair on the floor.

Thank you for your support, I really appreciate it.

Hot sauce helps stop that. Same with a person that bite their nails to much. Please some hot sauce under your nails so when you scratch your lips, you will taste the hot sauce. After a while you will no longer scratch your lips. Thank you for your support.

The rubber band on the wrist won’t work for me. I normally snap it while wearing one so I am use to it. I will try something similar. Its going to be hard to come up with something though.

Thanks again for your support, I really appreciate it.

Man, that’s too bad; I assume there’s no FQHC’s in your area either (health centers)?

Just throwing this out there, but there’s talk that St. John’s Wort, a herbal supplement, could help alleviate it to some degree. Works differently on different people, of course, and it’s not a cure, but anything that helps might be just what you need.

I think there is one about 4 or 5 cities north of me. I don’t think I really need a doctor though. My girlfriend is very supportive and helps me control it. (Or try to control it) She is out of town for a week so I will be on my mine with this until she gets back. I been fighting it pretty well though. I keep my hands busy so I don’t reach up and pull my hair.

If I can completely stop pulling my hair out, I will be overjoyed. I feel overcoming this will help me overcome anything.
