How To: Speed Up WordPress 3.1.3 Dashboard

by Deneil Merritt on June 17, 2011

I have been dealing with wordpress 3.1.3 backend being slow in Google Chrome for the past week and I have enough of it. So Thursday night/Friday Morning, it was around 3:30am EST when I finally found the solution to my problem.

For some odd reason that has yet to be explained to me by a geek (tech savvy person) why this was happening. (Please explain in comments. Truly I didn’t search much on why it was happening or how it was happening.

However, I did found out the solution that fix my problem. I am sure someone else is having. When I first did my search to find an answer to solve my problem. I came cross a lot of information on how to solve the problem for multi-site users.

How To Speed Up WordPress Backend

Well of course this isn’t my problem but I thought maybe their problem is my problem since both multi-site and single site wordpress install backend are slow. The wordpress dashboard area was very slow but the front-end (the blog) was just fine.

How they solve their problem (Removed the admin bar) made me think. What if I can solve my problem by just removing the same thing. So I logged into my wordpress powered blog (this blog).

I went to Users > Your Profile > Scroll down to “Show Admin Bar” Then I un-clicked “When Visiting Site”

This fixed the problem for me for the most part. However, the wordpress dashboard was still pretty slow but not as slow as it was. I added the plugin called “Optimize DB” which reduces the load in your database. This plugin helps speed up the wordpress dashboard again.

To Install the plugin, do the following; Plugins > Add New > Type-in Optimize DB and click Search. Click on install and then click Activate Plugin.

The funny is after I removed the admin bar and had the plugin install. The wordpress backend was still slow but it was because I forgot to make the plugin optimize my database, silly me.

Well that is how I got my wordpress dashboard back up to speed. Now I can’t wait for wordpress 3.2 to be released. I always wait a week or for them to make a few changes so I will mostly like upgrade to wordpress 3.2.1 once I upgrade. I learn my lesson the hard back in 2009 or 2010. One of the upgrades crash my server and it was because of something simple that kept trying to load over and over again that put the server in overload.

Of course with all the bloggers in their ear they quickly fixed it but I learn never to be one of the first bloggers to upgrade to the newest shiny wordpress version. I know we all want to quickly upgrade and play with the new features or see the latest design in the backend but to be on the safe side. Always wait for wordpress X.1 or wordpress X.X.1 to come out before upgrading to the newest version.

Did your wordpress backend become slow? If so how did you fix it? Was it the wordpress tutorial above?
