How To Add 3 Widget Areas To Header In Thesis

by Deneil Merritt on August 15, 2009

I spent around 3 hours trying to make 3 widget areas in the header for my thesis theme. Most codes didn’t work while others didn’t do what I wanted it to do. So I tried edit some code up from the footer code which semi-worked. I contacted my good friend George at Serradinho. He played around with the footer code and made it work! Thank you George.

So to save you time, I am going to teach you how to make a 3 widgetized header. It is very easy to do once you know how to do it. Also, I am providing you the code. I am just going to explain where to place the codes.

First download this file: Thesis 3 Widget Header (167)

Take the first code and place it in the custom_functions.php file. Then log into your wordpress admin area. Go to the widget area and see if the 3 headers are available. If yes, move onto the next step. If no, you did something wrong.

Important note: If you have a footer with widgets, some of the widgets you have in the footer will be in the header slots. Just place them back into their right place and your footer will be back to normal.

Place the next code into the custom.css file. This will make sure your widget areas look right. You can change the colors codes to what ever you want.

Now for the last code, you going back to the custom_functions.php file. Find where you place the first code and place this code right under the first code.

Now you are ready to place widgets in your 3 new widget areas in your header. I hope that this helped saved you time. We all know time is money and the more time we save the more money we save.

The only thing I ask of you is link back to this post if you download my file to make 3 widget areas in your header. If you haven’t already, go buy this theme right now at: Thesis

I haven’t read this somewhere else so I think this post can get a lot of attention by people who uses Thesis. When it comes to your header, I would recommend you to use one with more pleasant colours than black. Yeah I know, I also need to update my theme a bit.

I have nothing against the black color, but the differencies between the background and the wigets and header color are very different, well it may grab more people attention… Anyway it’s your the Boss, you decide whatever is good for your blog, and you’re right. If people are not happy with it, then they’ll just leave you blog, and that’s all. I think your article will be very good for people who are using THESIS… I don’t use it yet, but I might purchase it someday and use it on a new blog I’ll create… for the moment I’m very busy with my BANS site and own blog… wait for more $$$ to come, can’t wait!

Deneil,

Your before and after theme really showcases the value of Thesis. I really like how your blog is progesssing. I will have to invest in Thesis when my ROI increases. You readers may benefit and be inspired as I have, from an article showcasing the before and after progression with some screenshots, if they are new to the site.

Keep plugging away your growth is inspiring.

Looks great Deneil! And thanks for the post – I’m always glad to find a good Thesis tip. I’m new to it and also don’t have a lot of spare time, so I’d much rather find a good tutorial here on your site from someone I trust than to try to reinvent the wheel myself or figure out which Google result is correct.

Hi Deneil… your site is looking great, but I do agree about the color combination. The blue links on the black background makes it hard to read. You can read it, but it does not stand out.

I do not find black unpleasant at all… as I use it in my footer… but I think white links (or something lighter than that blue) would look better in areas where you have black backgrounds. Of course, like you said… that is my opinion :)

Hi Deneil,

thanks for the mention about the help. I would also like to say that it was a nice little job for me to check out and create it.

I see you changed the links in the header to white. Don’t you think it stands out much more?

Can you please suggest a way to place widgets just *below* the header? I want to use it for announcements etc. I already have my navbar below the banner so it will mean having a widget just below navbar and stretched across entire length for announcements.

Any help will be much appreciated.

I read other articles on this but non of them worked or worked the way I want it to. As for the colors. I picked colors I like as this is my home online. One may find black pleasant while another do not. It all depends on the person. I’m sure people that uses the 3 widget header will put their own style to it.

Indeed, I made the colors black, blue, and yellow to grab the visitors attention. I’m sure others will match their blog colors with their new widget areas in the header.

I am sure you will have fun changing stuff on thesis as I am once you buy the theme. Good luck with your blog and your BANS site.
