Are You Afraid To Be Famous?

by Deneil Merritt on June 20, 2009

Many bloggers or many all bloggers want to be professional big name bloggers in their niche. There are a few things one needs to ask him or herself.

Do I think I can handle it?

Am I ok with people walking up to me saying I read your blog?

People walking up asking how do you do it?

I am going to be completely truthful with you. I am totally afraid of being famous. The thought of people walking up to me knowing who I am and I don’t know them kind of scraies me. I know I will have to get over this because my plans will lead to this if I like it not.

How to get over the fear of being famous?

To get over the fear of being a famous blogger is to realize that if they know who you are then they must be a reader wanting to learn more. They like your blog, OMG They like your blog. (lol I just had to add that) They are into the same things as you.

If you are a pro blogger one of the top names in your niche then you must know a lot on the subject you cover. You can talk about it all day giving the chance. So give your fans some time to talk with you on your subject.

You never know what can happen. (This is what I am afraid of) Let look at some good things that can happen. You can learn something new from your fan. You may become partners in a big project. You help each other launch your own products.

Needless to say this is what small bloggers pray for and big bloggers do. Travel and meet fans of their blog. (With no fear? Maybe, maybe not) I should ask some big name bloggers how they deal with being famous.

I will keep being afraid of being famous until its time to face that fear and show the world what I am made of. I am sure it can’t be that bad but I prefer talking to a random person on twitter over a random person walking up to me on the street.

Are you afraid of being a famous blogger?

Seeing as how I don’t have a niche I don;t think I have to worry about being famous. Anyway, being a famous blogger is not like being a famous movie star. Somehow I don’t think we will be bothered by the paparazzi or anything.

I am definitely not afraid of being Famous. In the past I had no desire to be famous though. I always thought (and actual still think) that it would much better to be rich and not famous, but I think that it is easier to make money online if you become somewhat famous. I actual just wrote a post called, “Gurus Make More Money Online and Have More Fun Doing It” that addresses why it is good to be famous.

I still have a major fear about speaking in public, but I am hoping to conquer that someday!

I guess one should try and be adept at what one is good at. Thinking what others think about you or your blog is a menial waste of time. It’s against the ethics too. When things will happen they will happen. I’m sure once you become famous you’ll figure out a sensible way to tackle it. Get real.

To be truthful with you. I can careless what a person think about me or my blog. Not everyone is going to like my blog. I don’t remember the blog I read this one but the article said its better to loved by 50% of the people and hated by 50% of the people than to be ok with 100% of the people.

I have a few plans that will make me some what known in the “make money online” niche. I will face that when the time comes. I will let you know how I feel about it happens.

I’m not afraid to be famous. If I were, I certainly wouldn’t have the web presence I’m trying to have, that’s for sure.

What I’m afraid to be is broke! lol

It’s really contradicting for me.

I like to work online and the only way to be successful is to be famous.

However, I still prefer to stay anonymous to keep my personal space.

It’s contradicting right?

That’s a good question. I would rather make money and live in peace than be a famous person always under the spotlight.

A famous blogger gets more attention when he/she blogs and sometimes I think they are overrated. Get more attention than they should. I guess this is where they capitalize and increase their earnings.

Fame should not be the goal. Chances are you won’t be if that’s what you seek with a blog. However, an exceptional blog can definitely do that for some people and at that point, the “fame” will hopefully be more about the intangible benefits (relationships, community, opportunities, collaborations, new ideas, etc.). In the end, fame can be a good thing or a very bad thing. Maybe.

I wouldn’t be scared to become famous. The only thing that would scare me is that if people knew how much money I made they might rob me or break into my house and I might be shot or something in order for them to get my money or something haha.

That’s all that would scare me.

I think being a famous blogger also involves and responsibility, since if you’ll be famous, than lots of people will read your posts, and if you write something bad, than others will quickly notice that and may take example from you.

Deneil, no worries about becoming famous. Fame equals wealth. Once your wealthy, you can hire someone to help you get over your fear. It will all work out, no worries. Just don’t forget us when you become famous! :P

This is an old post, but it was featured at your frontpage just now , so thought I would comment anyway :)

Well – I’m not afraid to be famous, cause I know I’m never going to be *too* famous. I don’t know *anybody* of my IRL friends or family that has any idea who Darren Rowse, Brian Clark or John Chow are. So if I’m going to be famous, it’s really going to be deep inside my niche – which will be tough as I don’t really have a specific niche, yet. It’s more a general tech blog with some personal stuff included every now and then.

But you raise an interesting question though!

You have a great point there. It can be a very good thing for some and very bad for others that don’t want the fame.

You right we won’t be bothered by paparazzi but there is still the chance of being rush by fans of your blog. Maybe I am just putting too much though into this.

Sire June 20, 2009 at 7:12 pm

I think that perhaps it is the least of your worries Deneil. I just don;t think that people think of bloggers in that way.

You are right. Being famous online does bring in more money just because their name is well known.

OMG, I can’t picture myself speaking in public. Well if the crowd is less than 20 people I will do fine but over that I just might freeze up.

That could be it but what would you do if you became a well known blogger?

Reply

Deneil Merritt June 21, 2009 at 7:53 am

I guess you right. Mostly like people would be calm and say hey Deneil I read your blog. We will see when that day comes.

Well you are doing big things. We all know you are not afraid of being famous. You on your way there.

lol, that that we all should be afraid of. Sadly I am broke at the moment. Got a few plans to change all that though.

Plans are always good to have, as long as, at some point, one puts some of them into action. I’m pulling for you.

You don’t have to be famous to be successful online unless you in the make money online niche which you just need to make money and be social to make your blog successful and make money from it. From your link I see you are in the make money online niche. You will not be successful in the make money online if you want to stay anonymous because this niche is very social. If you can’t prove that you make money online and be social then its not going to work.

Yes, it is a bit contradicting.

A few of my plans are being put to action right now. I such see some results by the end of the month or early next month.

Yeah, I feel the same way but I do see the profit in being a famous blogger/internet marketer. There’s always pros and cons.

I don’t think “famous” blogger is overrate. They did the hard work and made it. I think their a got entrepreneur for capitalizing on their fame.

Ok, with that being said I have one question.

Why would you keep all your money in your house and not in a bank?

peartree July 3, 2009 at 8:26 pm

I found this article through google.

I actually fear fame myself. Not just as a blogger but as a person. I fear photographs, strangers knowing my name or what I look like. I don’t leave voicemails because I don’t want reordings of my voice to exist in the same way as I don’t want photos of me to exist beyond my lifetime or outside of my social circle.

I know this is probably a little deeper than then way you feel seeing as your url is your name, but Maybe it is of interest to you.

For what its worth I’m no social delinquent, I just avoid photos and Reordings of my voice, which is easier than you’d think in this facebook/flickr day and age.

Wow, yes you took my fear beyond me. I use to be the same way though. I didn’t want to be known at all. I didn’t even want to take pictures with my family! Something changed in me and I don’t mine 100k people knowing who I am but at the same time beyond that, I have fear of crazy people running up to me.

You have a great point. There is a big responsibility for well known bloggers.
